Workplace violence prevention is now a compliance obligation for many organizations, not only a security concern. California’s SB 553, in effect since July 2024, requires most employers to maintain a written workplace violence prevention plan, identify and correct workplace hazards, train employees, log violent incidents, and review their plans periodically. Cal/OSHA is also developing a permanent workplace violence prevention standard, and other states have their own requirements, often focused on healthcare and other specific industries.
